Platelet Rich Plasma is currently offered at The Sports Clinic at Winston Park.
This is the latest advance in managing partially torn tissues (including ligaments and tendons) and osteoarthritis.
PRP involves drawing approximately 30cc or 2 tablespoons of the patient's blood, spinning it in a centrifuge then taking the top layer which is rich in platelets and injecting this solution directly into the injured tissue. There are no additives, hence it is solely a concentrate of the patient's own blood.
The science behind it is based on the fact that the platelet rich surface layer is rich in various growth factors and healing cytokines. These go to work on damaged tissue assisting in healing.
The procedure is most often performed on partial tears in the Achilles Tendon, rotator cuff tendon tears in the shoulder, as well as osteoarthritis of knees and hips - using ultrasound guidance for the hip. It is done under aseptic conditions in the office and must be arranged ahead of time.
Feel free to discuss this with any of our physicians or therapists and we can help you decide if it would be effective for your condition. The cost is not covered under the provincial health plans but may be covered partially or fully under extended health plans.
